As the liner plows through a stormy Atlantic with thousands aboard, a team of Royal Navy bomb-disposal men parachutes into the waves and climbs up the hull. Their leader (Richard Harris) cracks open the first device and finds the work of someone meticulous, patient and several steps ahead. Every wire he cuts could be the wrong one. Ashore, a detective (Anthony Hopkins) chases the blackmailer's voice down a phone line while the captain (Omar Sharif) holds off the panic on deck.

Lester shot on a real ocean liner out at sea, so the roll of the swell and the cramped heat of the engine room are genuinely there — no effects, just pliers, sweat and a ticking clock.
