Synopsis

Harry Kilmer, a retired private eye, flies to Japan after an old friend calls in a favour: the friend crossed a powerful yakuza clan and the clan took his daughter. Kilmer has unfinished business in Japan — a woman he left, a debt he never settled — and what starts as a rescue turns into something far more tangled. The screenplay came from Paul Schrader and Robert Towne, two writers who understood that American crime stories get stranger in foreign soil.
