Synopsis
Pump Up the Volume (1990) is a cult American-Canadian teen drama directed by Allan Moyle — watch it online on iFILM. By day, Mark Hunter (Christian Slater) is the new kid at an Arizona high school, barely registering on anyone's radar. By night, he runs an illegal shortwave station as "Hard Harry," a pirate DJ who rants about everything the student body actually feels and is afraid to say out loud. When the show gets linked to a classmate's suicide, the principal, the school board, and the FCC all start closing in. Nora (Samantha Mathis) wants to find the voice behind the microphone for entirely different reasons.
The film runs on Slater's monologues — sardonic, occasionally raw, sometimes genuinely funny. The soundtrack pulls from hardcore, post-punk, and Leonard Cohen, which tells you exactly what kind of teenager Mark is. Thirty-plus years on, the core argument about speaking uncomfortable truths to institutional power has not dated at all. Stream Pump Up the Volume (1990) online on iFILM.
