Synopsis

Moll is a thief's daughter in seventeenth-century London, which means the world has written her verdict before she could speak. Her mother is hanged; she's placed in a convent; an abusive priest drives her out into the streets. She ends up working in Mrs. Allworthy's establishment, where a quiet servant named Hibble is the one person treating her as something more than property. A painter she meets later promises another kind of future.
Director Pen Densham takes considerable liberties with Defoe — this is part costume drama, part adventure film, not a faithful literary adaptation. Robin Wright makes the case that the spirit matters more than the letter: Moll here isn't cataloguing misfortune, she's choosing forward at every turn.
