Synopsis
The Snapper (1993) is Stephen Frears' Irish tragicomedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Twenty-year-old Sharon, from working-class Dublin, is pregnant and flatly refuses to name the father.
Word tears through the neighborhood overnight. To cover her tracks, Sharon spins a yarn about a visiting Spanish sailor, but the neighbors smell the truth. Hardest hit is her dad, Dezzie (Colm Meaney), who rages first and then, awkwardly, plants himself squarely on his daughter's side. The big, loud Curley clan rides out the scandal the only way it knows how — shouting, drinking, and ribbing each other rotten.
It's adapted from Roddy Doyle's novel in the Barrytown trilogy, the same run that gave us The Commitments. Frears skips the sermon: instead of a fallen-woman drama, it's a warm, sharp comedy about a family that closes ranks. Watch for a young Brendan Gleeson in a small part.
