Synopsis
The Beat That My Heart Skipped (De battre mon cœur s'est arrêté, 2005) is Jacques Audiard's French crime drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Tom strong-arms debtors and clears squatters from empty buildings — until an old face pulls him back toward the piano.
At 28, Tom works his father's shady real estate rackets: intimidation, a baseball bat, the occasional broken door. His late mother was a concert pianist, and a chance meeting reopens the idea of auditioning for a real career behind the keys. A young Chinese pianist, Miao-Lin, coaches him; she speaks no French, so they communicate through the music itself. Romain Duris plays a man split clean in two — Bach scales by day, blood and threats by night. Niels Arestrup, as the father, leans on his son with nothing but presence.
A loose reworking of James Toback's 1978 thriller Fingers, the film swaps New York for the cold underworld of Paris property deals. It took home the César for Best Director and turned Duris into a European star. Tense and physical, it plays like a drama with a fist in it. Stream The Beat That My Heart Skipped online on iFILM.
