Never Die Alone

Never Die Alone (2004) is a street-noir crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Rapper DMX leads as a dealer named King David, with David Arquette and Michael Ealy circling the wreckage he leaves behind.

King David comes back to New York to clear his debts and gets stabbed for his trouble. A struggling reporter, Paul, happens to see him die — then takes off in the dead man's Cadillac. Inside are stacks of cash and a set of tapes where King narrates his own life: the rise, the betrayals, the women he used up. Paul thinks he's found the story of a career. What he's really found is a reason for someone to come looking for him.

Ernest Dickerson, once Spike Lee's cinematographer, directs from Donald Goines' hard-boiled 1970s novel, and he keeps the romance out of it entirely. This is a portrait of a man who picked his own ending. DMX plays him not as a villain but as a worn-down predator, and it may be the best he ever was on screen.
