Synopsis
Steel Rain (강철비, 2017) is a South Korean action thriller directed by Yang Woo-suk — watch it online on iFILM. A military coup erupts in Pyongyang, and a North Korean special agent finds himself crossing the border south with the critically wounded North Korean leader in tow, hiding in Seoul while his own government's operatives close in on both of them.
Jung Woo-sung plays the agent — disciplined, pragmatic, completely out of his element on the other side of the DMZ. Kwak Do-won is the South Korean presidential security advisor who has every reason not to trust him and helps him anyway. The two spend the film's 139 minutes trying to keep the situation from escalating into a nuclear exchange while politicians on multiple sides manoeuvre for advantage.
Yang Woo-suk based the film on his own webtoon and loaded it with procedural detail about inter-Korean tensions that feels less like fiction than extrapolation. It became one of the biggest South Korean box office releases of 2017. For viewers familiar with the peninsula's politics, it hits differently. Stream Steel Rain (2017) online on iFILM.
