A speeding ticket in the wrong town sends wealthy publisher Chris, his would-be date Diane and two accidental hitchhikers before Judge Alvin Valkenheiser — ancient, grotesque and running what appears to be a private justice system somewhere in rural New Jersey. Getting away is the problem. The judge really doesn't want them to leave.
Aykroyd conceived the whole thing himself and never directed again after the reviews came in. Critics were brutal in 1991; audiences largely agreed. Decades later a small but devoted following insists the film's fever-dream production design and unhinged practical effects are exactly the point.
