Synopsis
Princesses (Princesas, 2005) is Fernando León de Aranoa's Spanish drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It's a story of friendship on the streets of Madrid, anchored by Candela Peña.
Caye works as a prostitute, though her family believes she earns a living some other way. One day she finds her neighbour Zulema — a Dominican woman without papers — beaten in the bathroom. Zulema is the kind of immigrant Caye's own co-workers sneer at. Out of that chance encounter grows a closeness neither of them expected, and neither quite trusts.
De Aranoa films the two women without pity and without judgement, which is where the bitter irony of the title comes from. It's an intimate, deeply humane piece about two people standing on different edges of the same hardship and holding on to each other. The role earned Candela Peña a Goya.
