Synopsis
The Ages of Lulu (Las edades de Lulú, 1990) is a Spanish erotic drama directed by Bigas Luna — watch online on iFILM. Based on Almudena Grandes' novel, the film follows fifteen-year-old Lulu, who has her first sexual encounter with Pablo, a much older family friend. Years pass. They marry. But Pablo keeps engineering new experiences for her, and Lulu — protected, kept, never quite her own person — eventually goes looking for the parts of herself he didn't get to first.
Francesca Neri plays Lulu across several years of her life, and it's a performance that holds the film's uncomfortable centre together. A young Javier Bardem appears in a supporting role. Bigas Luna makes no effort to soften the material: what the film is really about is the distance between desire and control, dressed up as a love story.
