Synopsis
Birdcage Inn (파란대문, 1998) — an early feature from South Korean director Kim Ki-duk — is available to watch online on iFILM. After Seoul's red-light district is bulldozed, young Jin-a relocates to the coastal city of Pohang and rents a room in a modest family guesthouse.
The family running the inn is already fraying: parents managing a struggling business, a college-student daughter named Hye-mi, and a teenage son who doesn't know where to look when Jin-a is around. She continues working as a prostitute, quietly and without apology, which gradually fractures the household. What Ki-duk constructs between Jin-a and Hye-mi — two young women the same age, sharing a wall and almost nothing else — becomes the film's quiet center.
Spare in style and unsentimental in tone, Birdcage Inn signals the restrained, uncomfortable cinema Ki-duk would develop across his career. Watch it online on iFILM.
