Synopsis
Real Life (1979) is Albert Brooks' satirical comedy, free to watch online on iFILM. It was his directing debut, and he aimed it straight at a future nobody had named yet: years before reality TV existed, Brooks was already mocking the idea of a camera capturing an "ordinary" family.
Brooks himself plays a pushy, self-obsessed filmmaker who talks a Phoenix family into letting his crew document every hour of their lives. The longer the project runs, the clearer it gets — the camera is wrecking the very life it claims to record. Charles Grodin plays the father, and his quiet bewilderment anchors the whole farce.
Brooks made this two decades before The Truman Show and the reality boom, and his aim was unnervingly accurate. The humor is dry, awkward and smart, best suited to viewers who like their satire sharp rather than loud. Stream Real Life (1979) online on iFILM.
