Synopsis
Red Road (2006) is a British-Danish drama directed by Andrea Arnold that you can watch online on iFILM — her feature debut, shot in Glasgow with Kate Dickie in a performance that put her on the map for European cinema. Dickie plays Jackie, a CCTV operator who spends her days watching the city through monitors, tracking strangers she's learned to read without ever meeting.
Then a face appears on screen. She recognizes it. That's the setup, and Arnold holds it there deliberately — who the man is and what he means to Jackie stays compressed until the film is ready to release it. In the meantime Jackie follows him out of the control room and into the real streets of the Red Road estate, engineering a way into his life under a false reason. The camera stays close, the dialogue is sparse, and the atmosphere sits somewhere between dread and compulsion.
Red Road took the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2006. Arnold went on to make Fish Tank and American Honey; this is where that voice started. Stream Red Road (2006) online on iFILM.
