Synopsis
Escaflowne: The Movie (2000) is a Japanese fantasy anime you can watch online on iFILM. Director Kazuki Akane reworks the cult TV series into a single feature. Hitomi, a withdrawn Tokyo schoolgirl with no reason to keep going, is pulled across worlds into Gaea when a strange voice answers her despair.
Gaea runs on sword, sorcery and endless war. There Hitomi meets Van Fanel, the last heir of the Dragon bloodline, and discovers she is the key to Escaflowne, a legendary suit of dragon armor. The Black Dragon Clan wants that power turned toward ruin. A lost girl and a grim young warrior have to trust each other, even though both arrive carrying old wounds and the conviction that nothing they do can matter.
The film is darker and more inward than the show, trading wide adventure for the slow unbreaking of two damaged kids. Maaya Sakamoto voices Hitomi, and the score comes from Yoko Kanno and Hajime Mizoguchi, the sound that defined the whole franchise.
