Elena is Cuban-American, and seventh grade turns out to be tougher than any campaign trail. First crushes, a falling-out with her best friend, an older brother who acts like the household opposition, and a mom rebuilding her life after divorce. Tess Romero carries it all, balancing presidential ambition with the everyday panic of being thirteen. Selenis Leyva plays her mother and Charlie Bushnell her brother Bobby.

Created by Ilana Peña, the show is produced by Gina Rodriguez, who also voices the grown-up Elena narrating from years ahead. The result is a warm coming-of-age story where "politics" really means a girl learning to stand her ground. Good pick for families with tweens and anyone who likes a sitcom with no mean streak.
