Synopsis
The Women on the 6th Floor (Les Femmes du 6e étage, 2011) is a French comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Philippe Le Guay and starring Fabrice Luchini and Sandrine Kiberlain.
Paris, early 1960s. Jean-Louis Joubert is a stockbroker with a precisely ordered life: a stiff apartment, a stiffer wife, two sons away at boarding school. Then he discovers the servants' quarters one floor up — a cramped landing shared by a crowd of Spanish maids, loud and warm and nothing like his own existence. The new maid Maria (Natalia Verbeke), along with Carmen Maura and the rest of the sixth-floor regulars, gradually pulls him into a version of life he didn't know he was missing.
Le Guay plays the class gap for gentle comedy rather than polemic, and the film is better for it. Luchini's slow-motion defrost is what carries the whole thing. Not a revolutionary film — but an unusually pleasant one. Stream The Women on the 6th Floor (2011) online on iFILM.
