Synopsis
A fifteen-year-old who knows he won't make it to sixteen — that's the hero of Death of a Superhero (2011), and you can watch it online on iFILM. Director Ian Fitzgibbon follows Donald Clark, a terminally ill teenager who escapes hospital corridors into the comic book he draws himself, casting his own face as an unkillable champion.
On the page his alter ego battles a bald villain wielding a giant syringe, a way of fighting the cancer he can't beat in life. Off the page Donald just wants the ordinary stuff first: getting drunk with friends, falling for a girl, being something other than the sick kid everyone pities. An unconventional therapist named Adrian King, played by Andy Serkis, tries to reach him, while Thomas Brodie-Sangster gives Donald a raw, prickly edge.
Adapted by Anthony McCarten from his own novel, the film weaves hand-drawn animation through a very grounded story about dread and the stubborn urge to live.
