Synopsis
Merantau (2009) is an Indonesian martial arts action film you can watch online on iFILM. Director Gareth Evans, a Welsh filmmaker working in Indonesia, built this 134-minute feature around one thing: the combat art of Silat Harimau, rarely seen on screen before. Iko Uwais, himself a Silat practitioner, stars in the lead role.
Yuda is a young man from a farming village in West Sumatra, raised on an ancient Minangkabau rite called merantau — when you come of age, you leave home, head to the city, and prove your worth through hardship. Jakarta has no interest in making that easy. Broke and directionless, he stumbles into rescuing Astri, a girl hunted by a trafficking ring led by the cold-blooded Ratger (Mads Koudal) and his enforcer Luc.
The fight sequences here are the reason the film still gets talked about. Evans and Uwais shot Silat up close without the quick-cut evasions that hide stunt work — what you see is what happened. This was Uwais's breakthrough years before The Raid landed, and the choreography holds up. Stream Merantau (2009) online on iFILM.
