Synopsis
Black Earth Rising (2018) — watch online on iFILM. All eight episodes were written and directed by Hugo Blick for BBC Two and Netflix. Michaela Coel plays Kate Ashby, a woman pulled out of the Rwandan genocide as a young child and raised in London by a human rights lawyer (Noma Dumezweni).
Kate now works alongside her adoptive mother prosecuting African war crimes cases. A new assignment drags her back toward her own past — the part she's spent years not examining. Who actually did what in 1994? And are the international courts pursuing justice, or managing a narrative? John Goodman plays an American attorney whose interests are not entirely clear.
Blick's series is denser and more politically uncomfortable than standard legal drama. It refuses clean villains, doesn't spare Western institutions, and Coel gives the kind of performance that makes you forget the plot machinations and just watch the person.
