Synopsis
Last Life in the Universe (2003) is a hushed drama from Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, available to watch online on iFILM. Kenji, a Japanese librarian in Bangkok, spends his days tidying an already spotless apartment and thinking about ending his life.
Kenji (Tadanobu Asano) is obsessively neat and utterly alone. Just as he's ready to jump from a bridge, he witnesses a young Thai woman named Nid die right in front of him. Her older sister Noi drifts into his orbit instead — messy, impulsive, his complete opposite. Two lost people end up sharing a house and slowly teach each other how to keep going.
A Japanese-Thai co-production, the film was shot by the great cinematographer Christopher Doyle, who turns bare rooms and a dusty beach into quiet poetry. Don't come for the action; this is a slow, melancholy study of intimacy between strangers. Stream Last Life in the Universe online on iFILM.
