Synopsis
Thieves Like Us (1974) is Robert Altman's crime drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Set in Depression-era Mississippi, it treats robbing banks not as a thrill but as the only trade its characters have ever learned.
Three men break out of prison: young, green Bowie, the motormouth Chicamaw and the seasoned T-Dub. Back outside they pick up where they left off, hitting one bank after another. But Bowie falls for Keechie, a quiet, adrift young woman, and the pull toward an ordinary life drags him one way while his partners — and a press busy turning them into celebrities — drag him the other. Keith Carradine and Shelley Duvall play a couple whose tenderness keeps surfacing through the doom. Louise Fletcher and Tom Skerritt fill out the cast.
Altman stripped out almost all the score and let a 1930s radio murmur underneath instead — announcers and serials becoming a wry running commentary. There's no glamour to the robberies: it's a slow, sad film about people left with no real options. It adapts Edward Anderson's novel, once filmed by Nicholas Ray as well.
