Synopsis
Hope Gap (2019) is a British drama written and directed by William Nicholson, available to watch online on iFILM. After twenty-nine years of marriage, a husband uses a single conversation to tell his wife he is leaving her for someone else.
Grace (Annette Bening) leads a settled life in a town on England's south coast, with no idea that her husband Edward (Bill Nighy) has already made up his mind. He waits for their grown son Jamie (Josh O'Connor) to visit, so the young man will be in the house — and then he walks out. What follows isn't one catastrophe but its long aftershock: shock, fury, the urge to cling to what's already gone, and a slow climb back toward herself. Jamie ends up stranded between his parents, refusing to take a side.
Nicholson drew the film from his own parents' breakup, and it rests on two performances: Nighy's chilly restraint set against Bening's raw, exposed grief. This is quiet, grown-up filmmaking built around the idea that it's never too late to start again. A fine choice for anyone who loves understated English dramas about feeling.
