Synopsis
Sometimes a Great Notion (1971) is Paul Newman's rain-soaked drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Out in logging-country Oregon, the Stamper family keeps cutting and floating timber down the Wakonda River while the whole town walks out on strike — and they refuse to quit.
The clan motto says it all: never give an inch. Hank Stamper (Newman) drives his relatives to fell more trees, his bullheaded father Henry (Henry Fonda) bends to no one, Hank's wife just wants a day of peace, and half-brother Leland turns up to work hauling a load of old grudges with him. The harder they push, the steeper the price of every choice, and the river forgives nothing.
Newman directed this adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel about people who treat stubbornness and hard labor like a faith. Richard Jaeckel earned an Oscar nomination for his work here. Tough, wet and unsentimental, it's for viewers who like stories about what principles actually cost. Stream Sometimes a Great Notion (1971) online on iFILM.
