Synopsis
The Way West (1967) is Andrew V. McLaglen's western, ready to watch online on iFILM. A wagon train grinds along the Oregon Trail under former senator William Tadlock — a man who cares more about the promised land ahead than the people hauling toward it.
Kirk Douglas plays Tadlock hard and proud, as ruthless with himself as with anyone in the column. Pushing back is homesteader Lije Evans, played by Robert Mitchum as a weathered scout with failing eyes. The two keep colliding while the road serves up one disaster after another — rivers, sickness, exhaustion. The turning point comes when a settler accidentally kills a young Native boy, and the train metes out its own brand of frontier justice. Richard Widmark anchors the third corner of the cast.
It's adapted from A.B. Guthrie Jr.'s Pulitzer-winning novel, which is why the heroics stay small and the cost of every mile stays large. Three old-Hollywood stars in one frame is reason enough to press play. Stream The Way West (1967) online on iFILM.
