Synopsis
Watch Life on Our Planet (2023) online on iFILM — a Netflix nature docuseries narrated by Morgan Freeman, produced by Silverback Films. Eight episodes trace four billion years of life on Earth across five mass extinctions, each of which erased most of what had evolved before it.
The production pairs real wildlife footage with photorealistic CGI reconstruction of vanished species — trilobites swarming Cambrian seas, giant flightless birds stalking Eocene forests, the ocean predators that went before any shark you'd recognise. Each episode anchors itself to one crisis event and the lineages that came through the other side. Directors include Sophie Lanfear, Adam Chapman and Barny Revill, drawing on the same natural history tradition that built Silverback's reputation on Our Planet.
What sets it apart from standard deep-time documentaries is the focus on contingency: survival wasn't inevitable, it was specific. A useful companion to Our Planet for anyone curious why today's animals look the way they do. Stream all episodes of Life on Our Planet on iFILM.
