Synopsis
The Extra Man (2010) is an oddball comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Aspiring playwright Louis Ives arrives in New York hauling a suitcase of strange fantasies and rents a room from the most peculiar man in the city.
That man is Henry Harrison, and Kevin Kline plays him with pure relish: a broke playwright who pays the bills by escorting wealthy Upper East Side widows to the opera and to dinner parties. Not a gigolo — a gentleman, as he proudly insists. Paul Dano gives Louis all the fidgety awkwardness of someone still working out who he is. Between lessons in social parasitism, cut-rate ballet tickets and a high-voiced neighbour (John C. Reilly under a gray mane), Louis develops a crush on an earnest environmentalist played by Katie Holmes.
Directors Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman adapted Jonathan Ames' novel, and the tagline doesn't oversell it: a sexless new comedy. The film runs on its eccentrics rather than its plot, and it's for viewers who like their New York humor strange, a little melancholy and never crude. Stream The Extra Man (2010) online on iFILM.
