Jude (Asa Butterfield) is a Vermont kid who shows up in Manhattan to find the father he barely knows (Ethan Hawke). His best friend Teddy dies of an overdose that same night. Then the complication: Teddy's girlfriend Elisa (Hailee Steinfeld) is pregnant. Jude decides to step up, the long-absent father gets pulled back in, and Hawke's character's brother (Emile Hirsch) adds another moving part. Late-80s New York — rotting buildings, straight-edge shows, no money and not much plan — runs underneath all of it.
