Synopsis
The Hollow Crown (2012) is a BBC series you can watch online on iFILM — Shakespeare's four history plays filmed as prestige television: Richard II, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, and Henry V, each directed by a different filmmaker (Rupert Goold, Richard Eyre, Dominic Cooke, and Thea Sharrock).
Three kings, three variations on the same undoing. Richard II governs as though the throne guarantees itself — it doesn't. His cousin Bolingbroke takes it as Henry IV and spends the reign haunted; the guilt leaks into his relationship with Prince Hal, who prefers the pub to the palace. Tom Hiddleston's arc across the Henry plays is the series' backbone: from a prince nobody takes seriously to a king who wins at Agincourt through sheer force of will. Jeremy Irons plays the dying Henry IV with the weight of everything he did to get the crown, and Simon Russell Beale's Falstaff is as funny and as heartbreaking as the role demands. Patrick Stewart, Julie Walters, Keeley Hawes, and Anton Lesser complete a cast that treats the language as speech rather than monument.
Shot on location across England, the series makes a clear case that power always extracts more than the person who wanted it expected to pay. Stream The Hollow Crown online on iFILM.
