Synopsis
Pixote (Pixote: A Lei do Mais Fraco, 1980) is a Brazilian social drama — watch online on iFILM. Director Héctor Babenco shot the film in the favelas of São Paulo with mostly non-professional actors. Fernando Ramos da Silva, ten years old and himself a child of the streets, plays Pixote with a rawness that no casting call could have produced. The film picked up a BAFTA and landed a Golden Globe nomination.
Pixote is swept into a state juvenile detention centre after a police sweep. What he finds there is a closed system of brutality: guards and officers who murder teenagers and pin the killings on other children. He and several others — including Lilica, a seventeen-year-old trans hustler played by Jorge Julião — break out and survive by theft and drug-running. Each step on the outside pulls them further from any exit.
Babenco refuses both sentimentality and resolution. This is not a film that offers a redemption arc or a critique with a tidy lesson — it simply shows what the bottom of a broken society looks like, from the inside. Among the harshest and most necessary films ever made about abandoned children. Stream Pixote (1980) on iFILM.
