Synopsis
The Dead (1987) is John Huston's final film, adapted from James Joyce's story in Dubliners — watch online on iFILM. Huston directed it hooked to an oxygen tank, rising from his wheelchair only to set a shot. He died before the film was released.
A Christmas dinner party in turn-of-the-century Dublin. The Morkan sisters host family and friends: music, toasts, gentle arguing. Anjelica Huston plays Gretta, a woman carrying a grief she has never fully spoken. Donal McCann is Gabriel, her husband, who hears for the first time that night about a young man who loved her once and died young — and who still matters, somehow, more than the living.
Huston took Joyce's text almost word for word, and it worked. The film finds what prose alone cannot: the face that holds a grief it does not name. Stream The Dead on iFILM.
