When his American career stalls, a Japanese club buys him cheap — the Chunichi Dragons of Nagoya. The team's manager, a retired player carried with quiet gravity by Ken Takakura, sees one last spark in the aging import and sets out to knock the ego loose before Jack wrecks the whole season.

The laughs come from a fair culture clash — lazy star entitlement against a relentless work ethic — and the film lets both sides be right in turn.
