Synopsis
The Get Down (2016) — watch online the Netflix drama series created by Baz Luhrmann, set in the South Bronx in 1977, when the borough was burning — landlords torching buildings for insurance money — and a group of teenagers were inventing hip-hop in the rubble.
Justice Smith and Shameik Moore play young men caught between the pull of the street, the lure of the disco clubs, and the new turntable culture spreading out of basement parties. Jimmy Smits is the local politician trading on the neighborhood's hope. Giancarlo Esposito controls the block. Renée Elise Goldsberry plays a singer whose voice is bigger than the Bronx can hold. Luhrmann shoots all of it with the same operatic color and choreographed excess he brought to Moulin Rouge — the visual language of the era is as loud as the music.
Netflix cancelled the show after one season of 11 episodes. What remains feels like an unfinished portrait of the moment pop culture changed forever. Stream all episodes of The Get Down (2016) online on iFILM.
