Synopsis
Running Out of Time (暗戰, 1999) is a Hong Kong crime thriller from Johnnie To that you can watch online on iFILM. Cheung has cancer and a few weeks left. He spends them not in a hospital bed but on an elaborate game against the police.
Andy Lau plays Cheung, who takes hostages and sets a deadline — seventy-two hours. The man sent to stop him is Inspector Ho, the city's sharpest negotiator (Lau Ching-Wan). The two circle each other, and it soon becomes clear the robbery is only a screen for something else entirely, forcing Ho to play by a dying man's rules.
To shot this less as a shootout than as a duel of wits, where a glance or a well-timed pause counts for more than gunfire. Andy Lau took home the Best Actor prize at the Hong Kong Film Awards for the role. If you like lean, clever crime films with no swagger to spare, this one belongs on the list.
