Synopsis
Running on Karma (大隻佬, 2003) is a Hong Kong drama from directors Johnnie To and Wai Ka-fai you can watch online on iFILM. A former monk turned hulking bodybuilder can see other people's karma — the past lives that shaped them and the punishment heading their way.
Biggie, played by Andy Lau in an outrageous muscle suit, scrapes by as a stripper and stumbles into helping rookie cop Yee track a dangerous killer. His gift shows him something terrible: a debt from Yee's previous life hangs over her, and the reckoning is close. Biggie tries to bend her fate, even though he once walked away from the monastery to avenge a murdered friend. Cecilia Cheung plays Yee.
This Milkyway Image production opens like an action thriller and turns into a Buddhist parable about cause, effect, guilt and acceptance. It took the Golden Horse and the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Picture. One for viewers open to an odd blend of fists and philosophy, where the ending matters more than the fights.
