Synopsis
The Outlaw (1943) is a Western you can watch online on iFILM, produced and directed by aviation tycoon Howard Hughes. It drops three men into Lincoln, New Mexico: the newly elected sheriff Pat Garrett, his old friend Doc Holliday, and a young gunslinger named Billy the Kid.
It all turns on a stolen horse. Doc tracks the animal down to Billy and, instead of settling the score, strikes up an odd friendship with him. That bond cools the long history between Doc and Garrett, and a killing splits them outright — the sheriff wants Billy arrested, Holliday hides him instead. Circling the men is Rio (Jane Russell), whose presence cracks their loyalty a little further.
The film is remembered less for its plot than for the storm around it: Jane Russell's debut, Hughes' drawn-out fight with the censors, and a release stalled for years. A genuine curio of old Hollywood for anyone interested in how movies got made — and banned. Stream The Outlaw online on iFILM.
