Synopsis
Bergman Island (2021) is a drama you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve and starring Vicky Krieps and Tim Roth. A couple, both filmmakers, travel to Fårö — the Swedish island where Ingmar Bergman spent most of his life and made some of his most precise films — to spend a summer writing separate screenplays.
The island has its own weight. Bergman's houses are open to tour groups, his sets preserved, his presence everywhere. Krieps' character works on a story about two people who loved each other and ran out of language before they ran out of feeling. As her screenplay takes shape, it starts pulling material from her actual life — and what began as a writing retreat becomes something harder to define. Mia Wasikowska steps in as the protagonist of the film-within-the-film, adding another layer to what is already a carefully nested structure.
Hansen-Løve is interested in how a place with this much artistic residue acts on people who arrive carrying their own unresolved stories. The film screened in competition at Cannes 2021. Stream Bergman Island online on iFILM.
