Synopsis
Attila Marcel (2013) is a French comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Sylvain Chomet — whose animated features Les Triplettes de Belleville and The Illusionist built him a devoted following worldwide — made his live-action debut here, and the sensibility is unmistakably his: off-kilter, visually playful, scored from first frame to last.
Paul is thirty-three and has never spoken a word. Raised by two flamboyant Parisian aunts since his parents died when he was a toddler, his entire world fits between the piano in the living room and the dance school where he accompanies students. His upstairs neighbour — aptly named Madame Proust — changes everything with a herbal tea that starts surfacing repressed childhood memories. Guillaume Gouix plays Paul with a stillness that carries the film; Bernadette Lafont and Hélène Vincent are the aunts.
Chomet treats the film like a score — colour, editing rhythm and fantasy interludes do as much work as any line of dialogue. His first live-action feature and it sounds just like him. Stream Attila Marcel (2013) online on iFILM.
