Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo

Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977) is a Disney family comedy directed by Vincent McEveety — stream it online on iFILM. What neither Herbie nor his driver, played by Dean Jones, knows is that a pair of thieves tucked a stash of stolen diamonds into the gas tank before the race started. Don Knotts rides shotgun and provides most of the panic.

The crooks spend the whole film trying to get their diamonds back while Herbie ignores them and focuses on winning. That tension between a heist and a race is a neat hook for a film that otherwise delivers exactly what a late-1970s Disney road picture should: broad slapstick, European scenery, and a car with more personality than half the human cast.
