Synopsis
Hatfields & McCoys (2012) is a History Channel miniseries directed by Kevin Reynolds that you can watch online on iFILM. Based on the true account of America's most notorious family feud, it follows two Appalachian clans whose grudge — stretching across two states and several decades — left a trail of dead that brought Kentucky and West Virginia close to open war.
Devil Anse Hatfield (Kevin Costner) and Randall McCoy (Bill Paxton) come home from the Civil War to opposite banks of the Tug River. Once allies, they begin trading insults over a disputed pig and a contested piece of land, and the cycle of reprisals takes on a life of its own. Every killing demands an answer; every answer becomes the cause for the next. Tom Berenger, Powers Boothe, and Jena Malone fill out a cast that keeps the human cost visible even as the body count rises.
The series pulled in sixteen Emmy nominations and claimed five, including Outstanding Miniseries. Reynolds stages the violence without glamour — the feud looks exhausting and stupid, even to the people inside it. That's what makes it stick.
