Synopsis
The Devil, Probably (Le Diable probablement, 1977) is a Robert Bresson drama you can watch online on iFILM. Charles, a young Parisian, drifts through politics, religion, ecology and psychoanalysis, and turns away from every one of them.
His disgust with a decaying world hardens into a single conclusion: there is no reason to keep living. Suicide, though, strikes him as a sin he cannot commit himself, so he settles on a colder solution — pay someone else to pull the trigger. Antoine Monnier plays Charles flat and remote, with no melodrama anywhere near the part.
Bresson worked with non-professionals, stripped-down gestures and the noise of the city in place of a score. The film took the Special Jury Prize at the 1977 Berlin Film Festival and still stands among the bleakest, most precise portraits of a generation that has lost its faith in everything.
