The Devil, Probably

His disgust with a decaying world hardens into a single conclusion: there is no reason to keep living. Antoine Monnier plays Charles flat and remote, with no melodrama anywhere near the part.

Bresson worked with non-professionals, stripped-down gestures and the noise of the city in place of a score. The film took the Special Jury Prize at the 1977 Berlin Film Festival and still stands among the bleakest, most precise portraits of a generation that has lost its faith in everything.
