Synopsis
"Betty" (1992) is a French psychological drama directed by Claude Chabrol, available to watch online on iFILM. Marie Trintignant plays Betty, a young woman from a wealthy family who turns up barely conscious in a Paris bar, her previous life apparently in ruins.
Laure (Stéphane Audran), a regular at the bar, takes her to a nearby hotel. She's not being charitable — she's curious. Betty starts talking: the prosperous husband, the overbearing mother-in-law, the scandal, the children kept away by court order. The story comes out in fragments, the timeline jumping between past and present as Betty's composure shifts.
Chabrol adapted the film from a Georges Simenon novel, and his clinical precision — usually aimed at murder — turns here on a woman coming apart. Audran, who was Chabrol's wife for many years, plays Laure with a stillness that feels like it contains a secret of its own. Stream "Betty" (1992) on iFILM.
