Synopsis
The Ramen Girl (2008) is an American-Japanese romantic drama directed by Robert Allan Ackerman that you can watch online on iFILM. Brittany Murphy plays Abby, an American woman stranded in Tokyo after her boyfriend walks out. She doesn't fly home. She wanders into a tiny ramen restaurant instead — and something about the way a bowl of soup changes the faces of everyone who eats it makes her want to learn.
The restaurant's owner, played by Toshiyuki Nishida, is a demanding, temperamental master with no interest in taking on a foreign apprentice who doesn't speak a word of Japanese. He takes her on anyway. Most of their lessons happen in the gap between two languages, which is less of a problem than it sounds — the kitchen has its own vocabulary.
The film is quieter and more specific than the premise suggests. It's less about Tokyo as a backdrop and more about what it feels like to rebuild yourself through learning something difficult. A small, likeable picture with Murphy carrying most of it. Stream The Ramen Girl (2008) online on iFILM.
