Synopsis
"The Assault" (L'Assaut, 2011), directed by Julien Leclercq, is a French action thriller — watch online on iFILM. Christmas Eve, 1994: four GIA terrorists take over Air France Flight 8969 at Algiers airport. Two hundred and twenty-seven people on board. The plane is supposed to land in Paris. It doesn't.
After a stop in Marignane, negotiations stall. The GIGN, France's elite counterterror unit, gets the order to storm the aircraft before it lifts off again. Vincent Elbaz and Grégori Derangère play the operators who trained for exactly this — and now have minutes to pull it off.
Leclercq built the film from declassified reports and first-hand accounts, keeping the invented elements to a minimum. That restraint is what gives the film its weight: the tension doesn't come from fabricated close calls, but from knowing the events on screen actually happened, on that plane, on that afternoon.
