Algiers, 1938. Meursault attends his mother's funeral without ceremony and starts a relationship the following day. When something fatal and irreversible happens on a blazing beach, the trial that follows is less about the act than about what Meursault refused to perform: grief, remorse, the expected show of feeling. Ozon matches his protagonist's detachment — no emotional cues from the camera, no nudging the audience. Voisin carries the film through stillness rather than expression.
