Synopsis
First Squad: The Moment of Truth (2009) is a Russian-Japanese animated war fantasy you can watch online on iFILM. The Eastern Front, 1942. Alongside the tank battles runs a second, hidden war fought with spells instead of bullets.
Germany's occult bureau Ahnenerbe raises a long-dead crusader, Baron von Wolff, from the grave — a knight who fell on the ice of Lake Peipus 700 years earlier. To stop him, Soviet intelligence turns to Nadya, a fourteen-year-old with an unusual gift: she can summon the spirits of her fallen friends, young Pioneer heroes executed at the start of the war. No tanks here, no planes — just magic against magic.
The film was animated by Japan's Studio 4°C and directed by Yoshiharu Ashino, from a script by Mikhail Shprits and Aleksei Klimov. It blends a Soviet wartime legend with anime style and mock historian interviews — a genuinely odd hybrid. Worth a look if you like short, strange animation that takes its myth seriously.
