Synopsis
The Diary of Anne Frank (2009) is a five-part BBC drama series you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Jon Jones from a screenplay by Olivia Hetreed, it adapts one of the most documented stories of the twentieth century and manages to make it feel immediate again.
Thirteen-year-old Anne Frank (Ellie Kendrick) goes into hiding with her family in a concealed annex of an Amsterdam warehouse — July 1942. Eight people, four rooms, more than two years. No daylight, no noise after working hours, no knowing when or whether it ends. Iain Glen plays her father Otto, Felicity Jones her sister Margot, Tamsin Greig and Nick Audsley the Van Pels. Anne's diary is the thread that holds her sense of self together through all of it.
What separates this version from earlier adaptations is how resolutely it stays inside Anne's perspective — curious, romantic, furious, funny by turns. It doesn't pull back for historical framing. It trusts Kendrick, and Kendrick delivers. Stream The Diary of Anne Frank (2009) online on iFILM.
