Paris, late nineteenth century: Georges, a carpenter with a criminal past he has tried to leave behind, meets Marie at a riverside dance — radiant, golden-haired, and already owned by the leader of a local street gang.

Marie wants out. Georges is calm, honest, and willing to take the risk. The gang is not willing to let either of them go. Jealousy and a code of street violence close around both of them, dragging Georges back into the world he thought he had escaped.

Simone Signoret gives a performance that outshines nearly everything in French cinema of the era, and Serge Reggiani keeps pace with her at every turn. Becker shot the film fast and with minimal production — it bombed on release in 1952 and spent decades being quietly rediscovered until critics placed it among the finest noirs France ever made.
