Synopsis
Machuca (2004) is a Chilean coming-of-age drama directed by Andrés Wood that you can watch online on iFILM. Set in Santiago during the final months before Pinochet's coup of September 1973, it tells the story of two eleven-year-old boys from opposite ends of the city.
Gonzalo Infante comes from a comfortable bourgeois household and attends an elite Catholic prep school. When Father McEnroe opens the school's doors to children from the shanty towns, Pedro Machuca joins Gonzalo's class. Everything separates them — money, food, the neighborhoods they go home to at night. Still, the two become inseparable, trading visits between a clean suburban house and a makeshift settlement where families march under red flags. The friendship holds as long as the adults let it.
Wood shoots the political upheaval entirely through the boys' limited understanding of it, which turns out to be the most devastating angle possible. The film earned wide recognition on the international festival circuit and remains a quietly essential portrait of how history lands on children who never asked to live through it.
