Synopsis
"Prayers for the Stolen" (Noche de fuego, 2021) is a Mexican drama directed by Tatiana Huezo — watch it online on iFILM. Ana, Maria and Paula are childhood friends in a mountain village surrounded by poppy fields. Their mothers work those fields for the cartel. When cartel trucks roll through, the girls get their hair cut short and hide in dug-out pits in the ground, made invisible, because visible girls disappear.
Huezo, best known for documentary work, builds the film almost like an observational record rather than a plot-driven story. There is no central villain to catch, no rescue. Just the incremental narrowing of three girls' lives under pressure that arrives quietly and stays. The film is adapted from Jennifer Clement's nonfiction book of the same name and screened in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2021.
Cartel violence rarely gets this treatment — no gunfights, no monologues, just ordinary childhood measured against an extraordinary threat. Stream "Prayers for the Stolen" (2021) online on iFILM.
